History
Deal and Walmer are steeped in a rich history of royalty, armed and maritime adventure, smugglers, myth and legend and are shaped by their strategic coastal location, featured in many paintings by William Turner.
Deal established itself as an important port and naval base during the Tudor period with its natural anchorage providing a safe haven for ships during storms and a hub for maritime activity. The 16th and 17th centuries saw Deal thrive on shipbuilding, trade and supporting Royal Navy fleets. Its seafaring legacy is still visible today in its charming Georgian and Victorian architecture, narrow cobbled streets, historic pubs, local fishing community and the castle forts of Deal and Walmer. Lord Napolean and Lady Hamilton famously resided at the Royal Hotel.
Walmer, just south of Deal, is best known for its castle, built by Henry VIII in the 1530s to defend the coast from invasion. Over time, the castle evolved from a fortress into an elegant official residence, which is still home to the Lord Warden of the Cinque Ports today. Walmer Castle’s famous residents include notable figures such as the Duke of Wellington, Winston Churchill and the Queen Mother. You can view the original “Wellington Boots” in the castle rooms. Walmer still retains its historic maritime character with its pebble beach, long tradition of lifeboat services and vibrant cultural life.
